SYNOPSIS
The Bakun
Dam is an embankment dam located in Sarawak, Malaysia on the Balui River. The dam was built by Malaysia-China
Hydro JV consortium, led by Sime
Engineering Berhad of Malaysia (a
subsidiary of Sime Darby and Sinohydro
Corporation of China. It has the second tallest concrete-faced rockfill dam in the
world. This project commenced in 1997 and officially started
operation in 2011 under 100% government-owned
company, Sarawak Hidro. The Bakun dam generates 2,400 megawatts (MW) of electricity for
Sarawak Energy, which is wholly owned by the State Government of Sarawak.
