Courtesy Visit to Shell Sarawak Berhad General Manager

On 27th February 2013, IEM Miri Branch paid a visit to Sarawak Shell Berhad’s (SSB’s) General Manager, Mr. Chok Chee Tsang. The purpose of the visit was to foster a better relationship between both parties and to seek his steer on furthering our collaboration as per the MOU.

IEM Miri Chairman, Ir Goh Soon Boon, started off by mentioning about the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between SSB and IEM Miri that was only recently renewed. Through the MOU, SSB engineers are able to participate in IEM organized events or courses at a discounted rate or even for free. If at any time, SSB requires any courses to be organized for its staff, IEM can also help in that matter. Ir Goh continued by expressing our hopes that more engineers from SSB would join IEM and play an active role in the organization. Mr. Chok suggested that we should have a recruitment drive at shell, highlighting why our current members (preferably from different engineering disciplines) found values in joining IEM and with some even moving on to obtaining their Professional Engineer status. He explained that instead of just ‘pushing’ for engineers to join, we should also focus on what ‘pulls’ them in. In other words, we should expose the more personal reasons of why they wanted to join IEM in the first place, going beyond just the standard benefits pitch that IEM offers their members. Then, perhaps, more engineers would be compelled to participate with passion and hopefully become an active, long term member of IEM. Besides that, Mr. Chok also suggested that we could approach the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) for discussions as well and hopefully come up with areas that IEM could possibly collaborate with them.

A total of 7 committee members of IEM Miri Excomm and YES made it to this courtesy call.
