IEM Miri Honorary Membership Award Night 2012

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch Honorary Membership Award Night 2012 was held on a Tuesday evening, 10th April at the Imperial Hotel. The highlight of this dinner was to award Mr. Mohd Anuar bin Taib, the Chairman of Shell Malaysia for his outstanding services to the profession and also the Institution.

A total number of sixty (60) guests attended the dinner. Among the guests were the representative from Shell Malaysia, Past and Present of Executive Committee of IEM Miri Branch, Young Engineers Section (YES) Miri Branch and companies that had signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IEM Miri.

The event began with a welcoming speech by the IEM Miri Branch Chairman, Ir. Goh Soon Boon. After the speech, the Shell General Manager (GM Engineering), UIA, Engr. Kamesam Shankar presented a mock cheque to the IEM Miri Branch Chairman. In return, IEM Miri Branch presented a token of appreciation to the Shell GM Engineering.

IEM Miri Branch had the privilege to have YB Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the Assistant Minister of Communication & Assistant Minister of Sports of Sarawak to witness the event. In his speech, he congratulated Mr. Mohd Anuar bin Taib for receiving this well deserved award and exhorted IEM, in the spirit of Mr Anuar’s achievements, to forge greater efficiency and innovation as their professional challenge.

The Vice-President of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia, Ir PE Chong who stood in on behalf of the President, Ir. Vincent Chin, read the official citation chronicling the achievements and contributions of Mr Anuar and informed the gathering that his election as Hon. member by the IEM executive council had been unanimous. He then formally, on behalf of IEM, conferred the award of honorary membership on Mr. Mohd Anuar bin Taib.

After receiving the award, Mr. Mohd Anuar bin Taib gave a very humble and down to earth speech despite helming one of the major oil and gas companies in the country. In his speech, he shared his inspiring background on how he first started in Shell Malaysia and how Shell focus on career and leadership development has given him the chance to mature and grow.  Before ending his speech, he also gave a word of advice to young engineers that were present at the dinner to approach our future with passion and conviction, and also always give ourselves room to grow and enjoy where we are today.    (See the full text of Mr Anuar’s speech in our Engineers/Engineering in Miri society section).

At the end of the event, members of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia Miri branch members took the opportunity to congratulate Mr. Mohd Anuar bin Taib personally and took group photograph together before he left for the night. Overall, it was a successful dinner and with this conferment, it is hope that engineers can be inspired by his achievements.
